Bridging Continents, Advancing Care: A New Milestone in Robotic Telesurgery

More than two decades ago, the world witnessed a defining moment in surgical history when Prof. Jacques Marescaux and IRCAD demonstrated that distance was no longer a barrier to surgical excellence through the groundbreaking Lindbergh Operation — the world’s first transatlantic telesurgery.

Today, we stand at another remarkable milestone in this journey of innovation.

Our leader and President of IRCAD India, Dr. Mohit Bhandari, successfully performed 10 transcontinental telesurgeries using the Toumai Robotic Platform by MicroPort — further strengthening the vision that expertise should travel, even when experts cannot.

This achievement is much more than a technological breakthrough; it represents a step towards democratizing access to advanced surgical care. It highlights a future where patients in regions with limited access to specialized surgeons can benefit from world-class expertise, regardless of geographical boundaries.

At IRCAD, innovation has always been driven by a single purpose — bringing the best surgical knowledge, skills, and technology closer to those who need it the most.

Our heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Jacques Marescaux for inspiring this vision, and to the entire IRCAD France team, Prof. Michele Vix, and Prof. Antonello Forgione for their continuous guidance and support.

A special appreciation to the exceptional surgical team at Mohak Bariatrics and Robotics for adding yet another milestone to their legacy of excellence, our AV team for their outstanding expertise in enabling seamless telesurgery, and Team MicroPort for their commitment and collaboration in making this landmark achievement possible.
